Creative Encounters: Exploring the research agenda around quality improvement in Primary Care

Wednesday 18th May 2005

Aims and Objectives

Aims of the Day: To foster productive discussions around quality improvement in primary care.

Core objectives:
(1) to share understanding about current local quality improvement initiatives in primary care;
(2) to explore the role that research-based evidence can play in underpinning these and future initiatives in quality improvement;
(3) to develop a future research agenda in the area of quality improvement in primary care.

Some potential outcomes:
(1) improved - and shared - understandings across local service and academic communities;
(2) an increase in the academic engagement with local quality improvement initiatives in primary care;
(3) the emergence of project teams interested in developing research proposals.

Style of engagement:
The day will aim to be interactive and discussions-based, emphasising dialogue between those engaged in quality improvement in Tayside and those interested in the associated research agenda. Presenters have been asked to speak for a maximum of 15 minutes (with questions afterwards) - and following a footballing metaphor, the session Chair will enforce this rigorously through use of a Yellow Card (3 minutes to go) and a Red Card (time's up!).
To guide discussion each presenter has been asked to finish with two sets of reflective questions in each of the following areas:
- questions that highlight the challenges of creating, sustaining and spreading service innovations; and
- questions that highlight core local research needs: what would you like to know about to enable you to develop better quality improvement projects locally?
