University of Dundee and NHS Tayside
My research focuses on the prudent use of antibiotics, which includes prescribing
quality improvement, the epidemiology of antibiotic use and evaluation of treatment
guidelines. I have over twenty years experience on applying the methods of economic
evaluation to understanding the costs and benefits of preventing healthcare
associated infection. More recently I have expanded my research interests to
encompass patient safety more generally, including medical education research
in my new role as Lead Clinician for Clinical Quality Improvement in the Medical
School. International recognition of expertise includes election to the Presidency
of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (2002-3)
and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (2006-9) and invited
chapters in standard text books, most recently on Antibiotic Policies for the
9th Edition of Antibiotic and Chemotherapy, to be published in 2010.
