Professor Huw Davies

Huw Davies is Co-Director of the SDHI and is Professor of Health Care Policy & Management at the University of St Andrews. Within the School of Management, Huw is Co-Director of both The Centre for Public Policy & Management (CPPM) and the ESRC-funded Research Unit for Research Utilisation (RURU). He is also Associate Director of the Pharmaco-Economics Research Unit (PERC).

Huw is currently seconded (60% fte) as Director of Knowledge Mobilisation for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Service Delivery and Organisation R&D Programme (SDO).

Research interests lie in the healthcare policy and management arena: policy design and implementation; organisational dynamics and performance; and public accountability. Major themes include:

• The role of research evidence in health care policy, service design and professional practice;
• Organisational performance in health care, its measurement and management, and the core role played by organisational cultures and social capital in shaping service delivery;
• Inter-professional relationships and the impacts of cultural divergence in service organisations;
• Organisational learning, organisation development and change management;
• Accountability and governance issues, including the role of trust.

• In essence Huw is interested in the role of research evidence and system information at the interfaces between practitioners, managers and policy makers; and in the organisational structures, strategies and cultures which foster high quality service delivery.
• Such issues are tackled using well-theorised, inter-disciplinary and multi-method approaches.

Huw is author, co-author or editor of a number of books.
